At the beginning - 3000 or more years ago:
- it was pressed into tablets of clay
- it was carved on tablets of stone
- it was scribed on sheets of papyrus or calfskin
- it was copied and recopied
- every word and every letter was counted to avoid error
- it was wound onto scrolls, and bound into books
- it was preserved in pots, and hidden in caves
- it was beautifully illuminated in the monasteries of mediaeval Europe
- it was translated
- it was printed and reprinted
- it was banned
- and it was burnt
Yet the more we learn about the Bible the more it becomes clear that its accuracy and truth have been preserved for us.
The Bible has been translated into over 1700 different languages - and 55 million copies a year are produced in Britain and the US alone.
So what exactly is this book that has had such a remarkable influence on the world over the centuries?
